Being an effective team leader is not dependent of the number of employees you may have. What is important is how you handle the people in your business and making them work harmoniously and most efficiently. By letting your people work as a team sets a positive environment and would increase the over all performance of your business. Members of the team will be able to share ideas and help each other finds ways to solve problems together. Each employee has their own tasks and responsibilities and putting them into teams would further the success of your business by teaching your staff to be team players. Being a part of a team would help your company reach its goals.
A successful team requires an effective team leader. As a leader it will be your task to make sure that the jobs are done as efficiently and productively as possible. You job is to provide your team with the things they need to succeed such as supplies, training, equipment and even your support.
As a team leader, your task is to help each member of your team to maximize his or her potential. There is a need for you to develop their talents through proper training and coaching. AS your team members trust you to perform your duties, so must you give them your trust that they will be able to perform their task. From time to time, provide you teams with assignments and allowing them to make certain decisions as a team. For your team to work together, barriers between individuals must be taken down to facilitate better communication and cooperation.
Building your team as a team leader requires you to take the necessary steps during the hiring process. You want to hire the people who will have the characteristics and traits of being a team player. You need to check their interpersonal skills and their willingness to fulfill team responsibilities and not just their individual contributions.
A team is all about individuals working as one in a group. There is a lot of team building techniques that can be employed to allow your employees to learn more about working in teams. Being their team leader, allow your team to set their goals and priorities. You can ask them to give their personal goals and priorities in one of your team meetings and from these personal goals, let them formulate their goal as a team. Teach them to trust each other by knowing the skills of one another. You can create a list of tasks and let the team decide amongst themselves who would be performing each task for the team. This way they can recognize and trust the capabilities of one another and learn how to delegate responsibilities as well.
Functioning as a team is not only through work. Your team should also have fun as a team. You can schedule team building workshops and outings to allow your employees to get to know each other on a more personal level. This will help increase their communications skills and better the cooperation between employees. Your team will then learn how to support each member of the team and at the same time be more sensitive to the needs of each individual.
Another role that belongs to the team leader such as yourself is to be able to motivate and make sure that your team is on track. You must utilize different coaching techniques so that you are able to address each member of the team. During your coaching sessions be sure you address each member’s strength and weaknesses and what would be the best way to share the good practices and improve on their weakness.
When you are doing coaching, avoid telling your members what to do, rather teach them to identify their strength and weakness. Allow them to analyze the situation and provide solutions for themselves. This gives them ownership of their responsibility to themselves. Provide them with the necessary feedback when it comes to their work. Feedback should be given positively and constructively as possible as not to antagonize your team members.
There must be setting and meeting of expectations when you do coaching. This way you are able to further develop your members and can give them motivation. Don’t just be the one setting the expectation; give your staff the opportunity to set their own expectations for themselves and for you as their team leader. With this process, it’s not just you who develops but also them.
Coachings with your team will give you the chance to understand the individual’s skills and weaknesses and allow you and your team members to discover ways to do things faster which in turn can provide your business some savings. Jobs will be easier to complete and faster when they are done with a lot of cooperation among the team members.
Learning to motivate your team is an essential part of being a team leader. One way your can help them get motivated to do their jobs is by providing them with incentives. There can be individual incentives given to people who as an individual has greatly contributed to reaching the team and company goals. This will encourage your employees to do their individual task better. Aside from the individual incentive, you can create a team incentive where the entire team can benefit from. This team incentive will promote them to work together as a team. This incentive can be a form of cash that the team can spend together or in kind like a team outing.
Being a team leader is never easy. It takes a lot of patience and understanding on your part to be able to drive and motivate your people. You need to apply all your leadership skills so that goals and the betterment of the company can be achieved. Remember as a team leader, you are only as good as the people you lead. Your team will reflect upon you and you don’t want to have a bad image right?
