After quite a long deliberation with yourself, you have finally decided to make cleaning as a long term career by starting your own cleaning service business. So what now? Of course, you cannot work and start the business alone. Moreover, as your business grows and matures, you would definitely need some helping hands to have the jobs done because you will have other responsibilities to perform like marketing and managing your business itself.

Since you are just starting, you can first choose and hire 2 to 3 employees with interests in cleaning, of course. With them, you can share your own cleaning style first hand. It is also important that you emphasize the importance of hygiene with the kind of work they have. And to practice this, you can provide them safety and hygienic gears such as masks, gloves, uniforms or aprons.

Familiarize them with the proper use and disposal cleaning aids and solutions. These solutions are usually toxic. It is always safety first. Techniques on carry out cleaning on any kinds of surfaces like wood, steal, and tiles should also be explained well to prevent damages on customer’s residence.

Then, these first set of employees will be the one to train additional hires in the future. You, on the other hand, will be more contained on improving marketing strategies and developing more efficient cleaning systems.

So you like cleaning and have decided to make it your career! You’ve even decided to make it your business! Just remember that as your business grows you will have to hire people to duplicate what you do. Eventually, you cannot do all the chores by yourself. You will have to find time to do other stuff like marketing and running your business. It is essential that you hire employees as your cleaning service business grows.

Start small and hire 2 to 3 people that you can train with your personal style of cleaning. Your home is the best training ground. Train them to be as hygienic as possible. Provide them with uniforms, gloves, masks when they do their job. Orient them with the proper use of cleaning aids and solutions. Teach those techniques on how to remove stains from wood, tiles and walls without having to ruin the surfaces. Sometimes you will have to do some research for the professional way of doing things.

Once you have trained your first employees select a leader from among them. The leader will be in charge of training future recruits. He or she will also be the over all manager of the crew every time you take on a job.

Employers are always seen responsible for their staff. Particularly for a cleaning business, you do need to know your responsibilities as the owner of your business. Your staff are always handling chemicals as well as cleaning jobs which can really harm them. You should be very much aware of this which is why you need to provide such precautionary measures for your staff members.

Besides for you, the government has also provided the staff with the right protection that they must have. The Hazard Communication Law states that you, as the employer should always protect your staff members from any hazards that your cleaning business might bring to them. This may be in the form of physical as well as the health hazards that your staff is exposed to. Remember that cleaning materials are jam packed with all of those harmful and toxic chemicals that can be inhaled and damaging to the system of a human being. On the other hand, cleaning with the use of ladders and even stepping on wet floors may cause serious falls and breaking of the bones when they clean. This is very dangerous for your cleaning staff that they might not even get to work after these incidents have happened to them. You should be very responsible as you run your day care or even as you plan to run your day care.

How are you going to ensure that your staff members are always safely doing their work?

You must always provide your staff with the right information when it comes to their job. They need to know that the work that they have entered in is very dangerous that they will be able to experience such health hazards. This will give them the right to decide whether they should continue with their work or not. You might be thinking that this might scare them, but basically, they just should just be aware of the right information about being a staff of a cleaning company.

Information can be supplied and not only in the form of notifying them of these hazards. Since their job mostly deals with such chemicals, you can always provide them with the information sheet showing what these chemicals are made of. You should do your research and explain to them the hazards of these chemicals. These information are called the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) which will give you all the necessary hazard information about the different chemicals. What is good about these MSDS are that they do provide information about proper handling as well as the first aid treatment of the chemicals. This will be very helpful for your staff since they will immediately know what to do should they are involved in any accident with these chemicals. You do not only provide the information as well as guarantee their safety too.

What comes with the information that you provide them is the training that they should receive. Your cleaning staff should know how to use these cleaning solutions. Also, they should must know what to wear when they clean. You should provide them with personal protective equipment (PPE) each time that they clean because these chemicals may harm them by contact or by inhalation. Do provide them with goggles, gloves, masks and even uniforms. A complete safety equipment will benefit your staff very much in protecting them from sudden contact from these chemicals. There are even certain techniques when they mix equipment that they should follow and you must always teach them those. Be very strict that they should follow your rules when wearing these because you will be held liable for such irresponsibility.

Always keep a log book where your staff will list down cleaning products that they will use for the day. You need to take note of the staff members and their exposure to such hazards. This will more or less give you an idea on what hazards they might be risking. You can always provide them with the information about the chemicals which they are using constantly. Nothing can make you more sure about the dangers that your staff are exposed to when they clean than being informed of what chemicals they use.

If you are willing to do so, it is highly recommended that you do replace your cleaning methods with greener ones. Since there are so many people who have been realizing the need to take part in the call for a better environment, they have been making so much effort into influencing the people that they should employ better cleaning methods. Manufacturers are already making green cleaning products such as solutions so that they will be able to take part in this advocacy to save the Earth. As you should be aware, you must do your part and support this call to be one with nature. By using these greener cleaning solutions, you are able to save the world in your own way. The best part about this is that you are able to save the lives of your staff too. They will be less exposed to these hazards when they clean. This is totally in compliance of the Hazard Communication Law.

Responsibility is such a big word that you might be scared to do this. This is nothing that you should be afraid of because when you ensure that your staff are completely safe, then you will feel better about running your business. You staff will stay loyal to you, preventing you from having a high employee turnover rate. Nothing can be beneficial for your business than this one. You will be saved from training the new employees once again. Plus, with more loyal and more knowledgeable team, you will be able to work together and think of ways to make cleaning a safer job to do.

Never compromise the safety of your staff. Always follow the Hazard Communication Law and trust that you will have no problems when you run your business. This is the best way that you can be a responsible business owner, so do your part and make sure that your staff are safe when they do their job.

If you are interested in hiring a new leader for your cleaning team, the most basic thing you have to look at is the present employees. You have to look out for the one that is the best. The reason being is that this is the one person who does the most dependable job. And this is because they normally go beyond their jobs. You must make this person your prime candidate for leader.

Reasons why they fail
Unfortunately, not all people who have become leaders do a good job as heads despite their outstanding records when they were still employees. And for the most part, there are five prevalent reasons why this happens.

First of which is their lack of a developed communication skill. The fact is that the cleaning leader may be the best employee in the world but with lacking skills in communication, he will not be a good leader. The leader must have the skills to communicate with the people around him, especially with the client.

Second is that the appointed leader is not comfortable in leading his old co-employees. In this scenario, a promoted leader who has gone on top of the ranks ahead of his former co-employees find it uncomfortable telling his employees what to do.

Third is that some of these people do not know what to do when a conflict arises. Every once on a while, leaders have to encounter conflicts especially between two employees and sometimes conflict with a customer involved. The cleaning leader must find ways to take control of these conflicts, if not they will fail as a leader

Fourth is that the leader, due to inexperience, make poor judgment. A good leader must be relied on to make the right decisions. But some leaders make the wrong decisions especially with daily issues. It is best that you guide them through in making the correct decisions and why these decisions have to be made.

Fifth is when the leader becomes lazy. This is where work habits come in. And some people have a change in work habits just because they achieved a promotion. They change from diligent to lazy. Often these people just simply delegate duties to their employees and do not work anymore.

With the five reasons mentioned above, and a few others not in the list, the key to helping these promoted leaders do a better job is to simply guide them every step of the way. Or a better alternative is to train them before promoting them. The thing is that there are a lot of reasons why these newly promoted leaders should not succeed. The trick is to simply hive them the proper training and monitor their training so you can be assured that the leadership skills that they gain are up to your standards.

How to prospect good clients
Since you have a house cleaning company, it is nice for you to land good clients. And good clients mean that clients that respect you for the job that you have done and are going to pay for the worth of your work. Most, if not all of these good clients want to hire a professional cleaning company which does a professional job.

Getting started
There is always a risk in starting up this kind of business you might not be able to choose the good clients right away but it is the best way to pump in some initial cash for the company. And as you do this, you will gain a whole lot of experience working on the houses of good and not so good clients. The only thing that you have to keep in mind is to stay focus on your ultimate goal of servicing good clients.

Never make the mistake of making yourself appear that you need the job out of necessity or need the money from the business to make ends meet. It is never good business practice when you accept a job that will pay you so much less than what your services are worth. If you ever agree to this, this means that the client has control over you and your job for them. You have to always treat yourself as a professional businessman. This is why you need these experiences.

Investing more in your company will give your clients that your company is being run professionally. The first thing that you do is to create a logo for your business. Next is that you should stamp the logo on all of your promotional materials. Once the logo becomes familiar to clients, you have now successfully made the public aware of the company’s existence. Stamp the logo also on all the company forms that you will be using, especially those that you will be submitting to your clients. This is the professional way. If you submit company papers that do not have an imprint of your company logo, the client might doubt the professionalism of your company and the job you are capable of doing.

Take note of these, and in no time you will be bagging in those good clients that you have always wanted. In investing in your company, you will be attracting them without even knowing it. And before you even say a word, these good clients will come knocking at your door. And that means big cash for the company and you.

The employees must know how to do their job
When you are running a business, be aware that the employees are representing you to your clients. Bur the question is do they really know that mush or enough about how to close the deal and do their jobs properly?

A lot of business owners are very preoccupied in concerning themselves with hiring new employees every so often. And this can only prove one thing, that they are not putting emphasis on training their people regarding the business and their jobs. But the truth is, in your business, the employees will do a lot of interactions with the clients themselves. This usually happens when they receive the calls of the clients and entertain them. Another scenario is when the employee goes to the houses of these clients.

In the article “Finding Staff to Complement Your Business”, it is thoroughly explained why finding good staffs is very essential. But how about retaining them? Why have the hassles in having them stay on the job? Let us then see what a staff turnover can affect. These are: Revenue, Productivity, Long term Viability and Customer Satisfaction.

1.	REVENUE
Having less number of people in staff means less sales volume so it is very important to have a fixed number of employees. Thus there should be immediate replacement for any staff vacancy. Such vacancies will result to technical work delays, lack in collected information, unattended customer calls and a not well-supported sales. These will all cause a instant decrease in revenue and it may continue if the problem is not attended right away.

2.	PRODUCTIVITY
Obviously, a decrease in the number of workers results to increase in the load for each of them. It also means additional work that they may not be specialized or even accustomed into. For example, if a receptionist suddenly quit, a staff member must cover up the job and he may pay less attention to the work he was originally assigned to. He is going to do the task he feels is more important but then neglect the other, less important but vital as well. If he is conscientious and has a sense of duty, he’ll finish both of the jobs. But apparently this is not the common case. Usually some of the jobs are left undone or not done well.

In case the staff left includes some that have a sense of duty. They would want the job done well. Given extra load, they would do their best to compensate and try having all of the tasks left done completely. But with a vacant position for long, this is quite impossible. Then, the pressure will continually build up for this kind of workers and they are the one who gets to be more depressed and angry. Having left the problem unsolved, they will soon walk out and left the business at a more difficult situation.

3. LONG TERM VIABILITY
Customer loyalty is very crucial in any business. If you want to stay in the business for long, you must find ways in building a long-term connection with the customers. If they leave or suddenly do not patronize you for other companies, your business will soon die. Then you must do everything to maintain the loyalty of your customers, and it involves maintaining the high quality of your products and services. And it boils down into maintaining a good staff to have the job done well.

4.	CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
Customers nowadays are very well aware of the quality of the products and services they avail. Tight competition among companies has produced higher quality products and a vast selection to choose from. Most American companies have then increased their service levels compared to what they do several decades ago. It means that to stay in the business you have to keep up with the competition and with the customer expectations.

But when you have a staff turnover, things get much more difficult than they already are. Losing employees needs replacement and having new and untrained staff will just make the things worse. Training them takes a while and you cannot afford to lose so much time because it means profit loss. During the training process, customer problems may arise due to mistakes of the new staff. They are then needed to be resolved and it requires knowledge of the business. It means involving the older staff and it may add to their discouragement their lowering morale. Customer satisfaction is damaged by the continuing mistakes committed by the untrained employees.

HOW TO KEEP A GOOD STAFF
1.	Any turnover from staff must be prevented and this can be done by having regular meetings with them. Constantly have a connection with your staff and discuss what’s going to make the job easier and how to improve the services offered. Get their opinions on how things must be done. Listen to their ideas and accept those that are feasible. Be honest. If you think that the idea is not practical or will barely workout, tell them. Implement as many suggestions as you can possibly do. When the employees feel that they have a say in the business and that their ideas are being listened to, they will feel better. They will then be happy to stay and work harder.

2.	Keep a set of interview questions for any of the positions you have in the business. It will be very helpful in case any of the position is left vacant. Immediate replacement will prevent further problems of the company regarding productivity, revenue, viability and customer satisfaction.

ASSESSMENT OF YOUR STAFF PERFORMANCE WITHOUT HAVING TO FILL UP FORMS

1.	Performance over Politeness
Some performance appraisal systems require managers to rate the work and then comment on things that may have nothing to do with the performance. This includes demeanour, cooperation, presentation attitude, initiative and other things. Your performance appraisal must focus mainly on the performance of the workers.

2.	Performance and Behaviour
Performance is what a person leaves behind; behaviour is what he takes with him. Managers often prioritize behaviour over performance. In this case, good behaviour overcomes poor performance. Consequently, poor behaviour overrules good performance.

3.	Clear Performance Standards
You must clearly lay down your performance standards in able to rate the performance. Tell your employees of what you exactly want so that you can objectively measure how they stand to your expectations.

4.	Meeting your expectations
Always expect the best. But you must be very articulate with the meaning of your “best” and how you will measure it. Create systems that will enable them to give that “best” that you mean so that it will be clear to them what you actually want.

5.	Appraisal Daily
It is recommended to measure employee performance at least several times a week, if not daily. This will not be a hassle if there is clear and definite performance standards. If you have been precise in your standards, employees can assess themselves before you do.

6.	Stay Prepared and Informed
Clear performance standards and good systems are the pillars of exceptional staff performance. Having them at hand, a performance appraisal will not be vey difficult. Be prepared to have a formal interview with an employee because it will be frequent.

CONCLUSION

A staff of a cleaning business could be classified as good if he possesses the following qualities: dependable, honest, and conscientious to details, admirable of clients and the rooms of their clients. Most importantly, a cleaning staff must love his occupation. Indeed, it is hard to find an employee that will possess all these requirements. However, you should attempt to find people that are ensured to have a good record with his work. After all, you will be the one who will be spending for the salary of that person. Aside from that, you will even invest on programs that will ensure the continued growth of your employee.

There are several instances wherein your employees are just working in order for them to get quick cash. They will perhaps use it to solve some financial problems at home. While you could employ these types of labourers, it is preferred that you prioritize first those who could be full time and those who are more suited for the job that you are offering. This is important because you want to provide your clients a semi-permanent cleaner, which will be the one that will be doing the service in the same house for a certain period.

A cleaner that neglects his job could lead you into losing several contracts. This may cause a problem in your business. The way you employ your cleaners should be done in a strategic manner. It is indeed very important that any cleaning group must allot some part of their assets into the selection process. One way by which any cleaning group ensures its survival is by having a formidable pool of cleaners.

When employing cleaners, one of the things that must be checked is whether they have a right to do labour in the country. You may also ask for some references from the applicant in order for you to have an inference regarding his performance in the workplace. It is important also to conduct background checks on the cleaner. All of this has to be done prior to giving to the cleaner the address where he will be doing the job.

It is very important that your cleaners should be conscious of their working hours. You must also settle whether they will be doing the job for a certain period only or if they are doing the job on a long term basis. It is also very important that you discuss with them all the terms and conditions of their work prior them starting doing the cleaning. It will also be good to always remind them that they must love their jobs as well. While the workers are working for you, it is also very important keep them motivated to do better in their job. Perhaps, they could be offered incentives and bonuses. These things could make it easier for them to find contentment in their jobs as cleaners.

In doing the recruitment process, it is advisable that the company goes to job centres or participate in job fairs. It could also be advertised in local newspapers or even in local communities. Doing these advertisements could make it easier for the company to come up with the workers that they need. The best way by which a company could come up with the best employees is by being able to project that it is the company that will be able to provide a satisfying job. In doing this, it is essential that the organization is sends the right message.

For the people who are seeking employment in your company, one of their main concerns is the amount of salary that they will receive. As a company, you obviously have to decide on what amount could you offer to them for the job that they will five. But before anything else, you must consider that you have to earn profit that is enough for you to further expand your business in the future. Below are certain things that you have to consider when deciding on the salary value that you will offer to your employees.

First, provide an incentive for your employees to stay in your company. This could be done by putting an addition to the salary of older workers. This then makes it appear that the longer you stay for the company, the higher will be your salary.

Next, make sure that people who are doing different jobs are being paid differently. Those who are doing jobs that are harder or those that are doing the jobs for longer periods of time should be getting a pay that is higher than those who do jobs that are easier and for a shorter period of time. Also, if you have different positions for your employees, ensure that those who are in the higher positions are getting the salary that they deserve.

It is also very helpful for you to know how much does your rival pay. This means that you have to do some research. Do research by looking on their advertisements or by doing survey from those people who have already worked for that company. If you’ll be able to match the salary they are providing or if you are able to even give better salary and benefits to your employees, then it will be more ensured that you may be able to hire the better employees.

Finally, it is worth it to decide on how much will you be spending on bonuses and other perks for your employees. Work out also the benefits you will be providing them such as giving them insurance in their work. If you will have more attractive benefits, there will be higher chances that people will be signing up for your company.

One of the best ways in exploiting your benefits provision is by providing incentives for those who have good performance evaluations. In this way, you make your employees do well in their job. Thus, you earn more confidence to your company from your clients.

Upon deciding on how you will handle the disbursement of salary and bonuses, make sure that everything is written on the employees’ handbook so that your employees will have a reference. This will be very helpful in you avoiding disagreements in the future with your employees.

In running a business, one thing that you have to consider is choosing the cleaning company that suits your needs. But how will you be able to find the best among a number of choices you have. The following advice will help you to determine the cleaning company that will satisfy all your needs and will be the best for your company. But before going through, you have to start thinking of the needs of your company. Knowing what you want will be a great help in choosing your cleaning services company.

There are different cleaning companies that offer different choices when it comes to cleaning. Before you start choosing, you have to consider what kind of cleaning your place needs. When you have a big business that covers a large amount of space, you may also opt for large cleaning services company that can accommodate your cleaning needs. If you have a small scale business, then you may opt for small scale cleaning services that can satisfy your needs and your budget as well. Large scale cleaning services may have the best quality but you always have to consider the amount you have to pay for it.

Large companies have a number of advantages they can offer when it comes to cleaning services. They offer services nationwide which means wherever your company is, for sure there will be a branch that will be near your place. Another is that they have a lot of employees under them so if you’re not happy with a particular person’s performance, you can request the company to send a new one. They have bigger funds which mean better equipments and high quality products that will assure the quality of service. On the other hand, small scale cleaning companies offer their services at a very reasonable price with pretty much the same work. Smaller companies also have a greater tendency to be able to adjust to your needs since they have fewer customers.

You should also ask the company about their insurance policies in case any damage will occur. There is a great risk in choosing a company who doesn’t have any insurance because in case something is damage while cleaning, the cleaning company is not liable for it. You should also ask for records wherein the cleaning company will monitor the tasks they perform like some sort of checklist. You should also ask about the price of certain services so that you won’t be surprise that you have been charge way much than you expected.

Take time to consider the kind of cleaning service that you need such as the area to be cleaned, how frequent should the cleaning be, how much are you willing to spend and the like. There are many things you have to consider that will help the company to understand your needs. You can talk to different companies and look over the packages and services they offer. Compare the different companies and take note of the things you like and don’t like about the company’s services.

A good class cleaning staff should possess the subsequent qualities: dependability, honesty, conscientiousness to details, admiration for clients and their room and most significantly the love for the occupation. However, while you may not get a cleaner that fits all these areas; there should be an attempt to employ cleaners that are completely vetted, insured, have signed an accord and that you are eager to spend in through tuition and continued growth.

In several instances; cleaners labour as a provisional means of getting some rapid cash to solve a few trouble around the house. While this may contain to be the container sometimes; you have to endeavour to take the essential measures to employ the right cleaners that are suitable for the job that you have to proffer. You should be able to give some level of steadiness in the cleaning overhaul that you offer; as customers would rather to have the similar person all through the period of using your service.

Also neglect from a cleaner could denote that you might loose several contracts all on one occasion leading to the defeat of your occasion and advertising resources. Employing of cleaners must comprise a strategic arrangement that should turn out to be apart of your functioning manual. This diagram should be level-headed that when used with steadiness could get better the way in which you give a cleaning overhaul.

It is to be reminded that the selection processes along by means of the insurance are major retail points of any cleaning group. It is therefore very important that some level of asset is put aside to do this. The optional vetting process of each cleaner should engage:

• Providing a fresh proof of address
• Right to labor in the Country
• Reference application
• Next to Kin (not obligatory)

This on top of is not restricted to the areas that can be used to examine cleaners, but they are positively standard ones that are approximately mandatory. Some corporations also does CRB cheques, for each members of employees that they provide work for.

In calculation to this system; you must make sure that your cleaners’ precursor an agency accord that is specific to your business. It is not proficient to just add things as you go along. You have to have it all in conformity before you offer a cleaner an address or a key.

Cleaners have to be conscious of the job hours and whether it is probable to be long term or short term. Keep in mind that cleaners that have authentic love for the roles; does so for a livelihood and so it is simply fair to give a clear account of the service terms before they start.

There are previous things that organization cans do to construct sure that they carry on to provide job contentment and they are petrol/travel incentives, in its place of cash in hand, imbursement on fortnightly or journal basis.

There are previous areas where an organization can promote jobs in Job Centres, in the local shop casement or paper or on online communities.

The key to employing the correct cleaners for an organization is about judgment a big shot that enjoys the job; but at the same time as an organization you must be eager and able to spend in your cleaners while maintaining good quality message and a good provide of labour.

What to Pay your Cleaning Employees

How do you shape out what a job is value? First off, maintain in mind that you are investing in your labour today to have an extra profitable cleaning business in the future. With any fortune you will employ workers who are keen to learn and cultivate with your trade. Before setting your pay degree think the next:

1. If you previously have workers, what are your present pay practices? You don’t want to be hiring new workers and paying them the similar or more than your present workers who are already taught. Look at your payroll accounts for the past year or two and see how greatly of your overall charge you are paying out in salaries.

2. Make sure you have work descriptions. Just a name such as “janitor” is not good enough. You need an exact job account that specially lists the key everyday jobs and duties of that location.

3. Find out what your rivalry is paying. This may entail a little digging on your part. You can make sure with your local job overhaul or workforce center to see if they have a salary review for the area. If no survey is obtainable, check out confidential ads, the local hall or other professional organization in your area. An online reserve for salary estimate is www.salary.com.

4. Set the pay ranges for your variety of positions. You may have a Level 1 Maintenance place, Level 2 Maintenance place, Lead Person, and Supervisor. After you have an initiative of the salaries that your contestant is paying, set an appropriate salary variety for each position.

5. Decide on any bonuses, perks or tuition expenses you will disburse. With a small cleaning commerce you may not be able to give health insurance, but think other incentives that you can provide to get and keep workers. You can give bonuses or paid days off for attainment performance goals or not missing any days inside a convinced time frame. You could also give discounts on goods, or pay for attending training seminars and workshops.

However you make a decision to set the salary, remember to think in front. You don’t want your worker to hit the pay cap in six months or a year. You necessitate to have enough steps in each pay scale to allow flexibility for an employee’s presentation. A motivated worker who is doing a huge job may go forward two steps, while an worker who is just “getting by” may be pressed up just one pace on the pay extent.

When you are prepared to get that new worker on board, make sure they have a reproduction of the job account and pay strategy in writing. This can be a small, 2-3 page text, or part of a complete employee handbook. Having everything in writing will assist you to avoid bewilderment or disagreements afterwards.

Here are some ideas on how you can hook your employees to stay and work in your cleaning business:

1. Cash incentives

1.	Gift cards to local stores like Walmart, Target, or food chains.
2.	Paid time or days off.
3.	If you can show them how they can benefit directly from the growth of the business by bringing in new clients, and by the current customers being complaint free, you will eventually develop a healthy team spirit within the company. They have to see how lots of new business and happy customers ultimately reflect on their paychecks. They can then get raises, enjoy getting new equipment, etc and everyone simply benefits. You can even hold a “company party” or weekend away activity whenever a certain number of new accounts are met, or after a period of time that the company goes complaint free.
4.	We give a “Star-performance card” when positive feedback comes in, and when a phone call comes in that’s positive we often attach a “Happy Card” (a gift card of a small amount, maybe $10 at Wal-Mart). It’s an unexpected surprise.
5.	We bonus generously when an employee refers a new client to us. So, if the client comes back to us three or more times, the employee gets say $100! We give them business cards to pass out to neighbors and passers by.

If you have not even tried offering your employees with any of these ideas, then now would probably be the best time for you to try it out.

High Employee Turnover: One of the Biggest Problems for a Cleaning Business Owner

If you’re in the cleaning business then you’ve probably experienced the problems with high employee turnover rates. Despite the continued rise in unemployment rates around the country, keeping employees happy and loyal remains to be a problem. Here’s one such experience shared by a cleaning business owner:

For the sake of anonymity, let’s just call him Bob. Having been in the cleaning services business for less than a year, this entrepreneur from Texas shares that so far he has fired16 of his employees, 2 quit and only 8 of his original 26 employees remain in his company.

He admits though that of the number remaining, he would readily let go of most of them if he could only find more qualified personnel.

According to Bob, he has previously tried hiring experienced cleaning service employees, as well as trained and certified employees and rookies who had absolutely no experience. But the trend among these people remained the same, seeing the track record, he had an inkling that keeping the roster of employees intact would be one of the biggest challenges that his cleaning business would encounter.

Given the fact that he already pays $9-$10 per hour, provides training, and has managed to strike a balance between being a boss and a friend to his employees, Bob feels just a bit loss with this personnel problem… He is in fact wondering if anyone out there can offer sound HR advice with long-term benefits. Sadly. Bob is not alone in his dilemma, his experience is a common problem across the cleaning service business – in any state or country.

Here’s how the cleaning service business people reacted:
Majority sympathized with Bob with his current situation, and assured him that he was definitely not alone. However, the overwhelming response pointed to Bob looking at the problem from within – himself and no one else! The industry assessment was that giving a higher salary rate does not make up for firing 16 people over the course of less than 12 months.

True, Bob may be hiring the wrong people too: Too young; too old; too desperate… but the truth remains that the employer has the bigger responsibility in making employees stay.

So if you have the same problems, ask yourself honestly: In your cleaning business, what are some of the reasons you’ve hired and fired people for?

Do You:

make your job expectations clear?

give your employees what they need to get the job done properly?

or… make bad hiring decisions from the onset?

Either way, it all starts and ends with you, the cleaning business owner.

When Hiring New Employees, Fist Impressions Last!

A cleaning business owner asked for help with deciding on whether or not to hire a potential new employee. The potential employee had experience cleaning and the business owner felt she would do a good job. The concern however is that she expressed an interest in starting her own cleaning business and already had a few friends of the family who were already clients (this was a residential cleaning business).

Other cleaning business owners shared the following advice:

*	If you have second thoughts then go with your gut and do not hire the person. If that is one thing I have learned over the years when hiring people is to go with my gut feeling, it’s always right. As I said TRUST is earned. I trust no one until they prove themselves over time.
*	I wouldn’t hire her. The chances of her tyring to do things “her” way are too high, which will over-ride your authority! Since she has had “customers”, she’s going to second-guess everything you do with YOUR business and try to tell you how to do it better… if you want the headache, go ahead and hire her, but I think you’re just asking for more drama than you’ll have time to deal with!

Hiring and keeping good cleaning service employees is and probably always will be a huge challenge in the cleaning service business. The only thing you can aspire to do is get it right the first time. Even after hiring the right people, you have to exert more effort in making sure that they know exactly what you expect them to deliver and prove as employees. Also, teach them exactly how to correctly do their jobs; Provide them with whatever tools or implements they may need to get their job done efficiently.

Lastly, never be afraid of giving them feedback… offer commendation and a “thank you” every so often does wonders for sound and healthy employer-employee relationships!
