Being an effective team leader is not dependent of the number of employees you may have. What is important is how you handle the people in your business and making them work harmoniously and most efficiently. By letting your people work as a team sets a positive environment and would increase the over all performance of your business. Members of the team will be able to share ideas and help each other finds ways to solve problems together. Each employee has their own tasks and responsibilities and putting them into teams would further the success of your business by teaching your staff to be team players. Being a part of a team would help your company reach its goals.

A successful team requires an effective team leader. As a leader it will be your task to make sure that the jobs are done as efficiently and productively as possible. You job is to provide your team with the things they need to succeed such as supplies, training, equipment and even your support.

As a team leader, your task is to help each member of your team to maximize his or her potential. There is a need for you to develop their talents through proper training and coaching. AS your team members trust you to perform your duties, so must you give them your trust that they will be able to perform their task. From time to time, provide you teams with assignments and allowing them to make certain decisions as a team. For your team to work together, barriers between individuals must be taken down to facilitate better communication and cooperation.

Building your team as a team leader requires you to take the necessary steps during the hiring process. You want to hire the people who will have the characteristics and traits of being a team player. You need to check their interpersonal skills and their willingness to fulfill team responsibilities and not just their individual contributions.

A team is all about individuals working as one in a group. There is a lot of team building techniques that can be employed to allow your employees to learn more about working in teams. Being their team leader, allow your team to set their goals and priorities. You can ask them to give their personal goals and priorities in one of your team meetings and from these personal goals, let them formulate their goal as a team. Teach them to trust each other by knowing the skills of one another. You can create a list of tasks and let the team decide amongst themselves who would be performing each task for the team. This way they can recognize and trust the capabilities of one another and learn how to delegate responsibilities as well.

Functioning as a team is not only through work. Your team should also have fun as a team. You can schedule team building workshops and outings to allow your employees to get to know each other on a more personal level. This will help increase their communications skills and better the cooperation between employees. Your team will then learn how to support each member of the team and at the same time be more sensitive to the needs of each individual.

Another role that belongs to the team leader such as yourself is to be able to motivate and make sure that your team is on track. You must utilize different coaching techniques so that you are able to address each member of the team. During your coaching sessions be sure you address each member’s strength and weaknesses and what would be the best way to share the good practices and improve on their weakness.

When you are doing coaching, avoid telling your members what to do, rather teach them to identify their strength and weakness. Allow them to analyze the situation and provide solutions for themselves. This gives them ownership of their responsibility to themselves. Provide them with the necessary feedback when it comes to their work. Feedback should be given positively and constructively as possible as not to antagonize your team members.

There must be setting and meeting of expectations when you do coaching. This way you are able to further develop your members and can give them motivation. Don’t just be the one setting the expectation; give your staff the opportunity to set their own expectations for themselves and for you as their team leader. With this process, it’s not just you who develops but also them.

Coachings with your team will give you the chance to understand the individual’s skills and weaknesses and allow you and your team members to discover ways to do things faster which in turn can provide your business some savings. Jobs will be easier to complete and faster when they are done with a lot of cooperation among the team members.

Learning to motivate your team is an essential part of being a team leader. One way your can help them get motivated to do their jobs is by providing them with incentives. There can be individual incentives given to people who as an individual has greatly contributed to reaching the team and company goals. This will encourage your employees to do their individual task better. Aside from the individual incentive, you can create a team incentive where the entire team can benefit from. This team incentive will promote them to work together as a team. This incentive can be a form of cash that the team can spend together or in kind like a team outing.

Being a team leader is never easy. It takes a lot of patience and understanding on your part to be able to drive and motivate your people. You need to apply all your leadership skills so that goals and the betterment of the company can be achieved. Remember as a team leader, you are only as good as the people you lead. Your team will reflect upon you and you don’t want to have a bad image right?

Cleaning companies have different approaches in performing their tasks – all of them are intended to maximize employee efficiency for bigger company profit. Cleaning companies usually use either zone cleaning or team cleaning in their business approach. The choice will all depend on the nature of the place to be cleaned and the kind of employees the cleaning service has.

First, we have to differentiate between zone cleaning and team cleaning. Zone cleaning involves the use of a single employee to do all the cleaning tasks in a particular area of a building – a zone. The zone could be a specific floor of the building which an employee has to take care of, an area that the employee may consider to be “his own”. Said employee will get to be familiar with all the aspects of the area he is assigned to, knowing the ins and outs, and developing a deep sense of responsibility. It will also minimize security problems as there will be only one person who will have access to that particular zone of the building during cleaning time. The common problem in the cleaning business – boredom, will be eliminated as the cleaner assigned to a particular area will have a variety of tasks to perform.

Team cleaning, on the other hand, identifies the different tasks to be performed in cleaning a building and assigned those tasks to different groups or employees. Each employee, or group of employees, will have to perform only a single task for the entire building or cleaning area. Each group will go from one area to another doing their specific task while another group will follow doing a different one. Cleaning tasks in zone cleaning are normally broken down as follows:

•	Light Duty – This involves the tasks of emptying trash cans, dusting, and spot cleaning. The members of the team will go from room to room doing only this particular duty.

•	Vacuum Team – The team’s only function is to vacuum carpets and hard floors.

•	Restroom Cleaners – They clean, sanitize and restock restroom supplies.

•	Utility team – They clean lobbies, spot clean glasses, scrub and mop hard floors, and take out trash to dumpsters.

One advantage of team cleaning is the specialization involved. An employee who is doing the same task over and over again becomes a sort of specialist in that given field. The employee becomes very skilled and efficient in the task assigned to him, saving on man hour needed to finish a particular job. This will translate to bigger profit for the cleaning business. There will be no need of training each employee on all aspects of cleaning – a task that could both be time consuming and expensive.

But before you make your decision on whether to use zone cleaning or team cleaning, you first have to take a close look at the building to be cleaned. One building is different from another; they have different needs and therefore different cleaning approaches. Use a cleaning approach that will best suit the needs and conditions of the building to be cleaned.

Leadership is an absolute requirement in any effort involving a group of people if the goal is to move forward or attain something instead letting chaos to prevail. Team members, or employees in a work group, may have specific roles to perform or part of the goal to be accomplished but a leader is always needed to perform a role greatly akin to the conductor of an orchestra that is composed of veteran musicians. Team work creates a very positive environment, enhanced further by the leadership abilities of its leader. Team work makes the members of the group feel that they are important elements in the “grand scheme” of thing, not merely an unimportant employee who is there for the fast buck.

In a cleaning business, team leadership is very important. Regardless of the size of your cleaning business, the employees must recognize the leadership and authority of the person who is guiding them through their work. Your role then, as a leader, must be clearly defined. You have to make sure that the goal of the team will be effectively carried out and accomplished in the shortest time possible but with the greatest degree of result. This will require the availability of supplies and materials, proper training of the team members, reliable equipment and the ability to handle them properly, and the support and confidence on the team members.

As a team leader, you should help every team member develop his potential through proper training and motivation. Make the members of the team feel that you trust them on their ability to get the work done. Make them feel that they are really part of the team by delegating them assignments and responsibilities and let them be comfortable in the decisions they have to make. You should not let any barrier stand between you and the team members by opening the lines of communications within the team.

Building a good team starts from the hiring process. Interpersonal skills must be an important factor in hiring an employee to be a member of the team. An employee who is unable to relate with other workers has no place in a team that relies on members’ contribution to carry out its goals. Such kind of employee will surely become a stumbling block for the team’s efforts at getting their job done.

After hiring a group of people who can work effectively as part of the team, a leader’s main task is the actual building of the team. The leader needs first to set the goals and priorities. There must be a clearly defined objective and a set of priorities in attaining such objective. Then the leader must create a list of tasks and distribute them to the members of the team who are in the best position to carry each out.

The team leader should make a study of how the different members who have their own tasks can work in harmony in attaining the main objective. Relationship among the members should be clearly established, making sure that there is an open line of communication between each members.

Team building seminars conducted on a regular basis can help promote better cooperation among the members of the team. This is going to enhance your role as a team leader of your cleaning business.
